Washington QB Cyler Miles retires due to hip injury
Washington quarterback Cyler Miles is retiring from football.
The program announced Monday that Miles has decided to hang up his cleats due to a chronic hip injury.
“Medical personnel have advised Miles that it would be against his best interest to continue to play on the injury, which has persisted throughout his career,” the program said in a statement.
Miles would have been a redshirt junior for the Huskies in the fall. He was the team’s primary starting quarterback in 2014 and threw for 2,397 yards, 17 touchdowns and four interceptions. He played in 11 of the Huskies’ 13 games.
Miles will remain on scholarship at Washington in order to finish his studies.
"I am grateful to Coach Petersen and his staff for all the opportunities I have been given here at Washington," Miles said. "I am disappointed that my hip injuries will not allow me to continue playing, but I am committed to earning my UW degree and will leave the program with many great friendships and valuable lessons learned."
Miles took a leave of absence from the program in March and did not participate in spring practice. UW head coach Chris Petersen said at the time that Miles was “dealing with some things in his life that are more important than football, and he felt it was important to take some time away from the game.”
"I am pleased that Cyler will remain committed to the pursuit of his UW degree, even though his injuries will keep him from competing on the football field," Petersen said. "We will continue to support him and wish him the best in this next phase of his life."
With Miles out of the equation, the Huskies will have a four-way quarterback competition when fall camp rolls around. Junior Jeff Lindquist, redshirt freshman K.J. Carta-Samuels and true freshman Jake Browning competed in the spring. Additionally, Washington brought in Tony Rodriguez, a junior college transfer from City College of San Francisco, earlier this month.
