You’ve got mail! Vanderbilt mails a letter to Ohio State to cancel 2013 game

Vanderbilt wanted to get out of a game at Ohio State in 2013, and that's not too unusual. Scheduling contracts get broken all the time.

But usually that news isn't broken when an athletic director sorts through his daily mail.

Ohio State isn't very pleased that Vanderbilt sent a letter to let the Buckeyes know the game, scheduled for Aug. 31, 2013, was off:

"Very disappointed that it happened this way," Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "We have 11 months, and we didn't get a phone call, we just got a letter. So I'm very disappointed in that.

"I would have preferred a phone call as opposed to a form letter, but that's just the way it is."

The letter came on the same day as the SEC announced its full schedule, and even if Ohio State had lost Vanderbilt's letter in a stack of monthly bills and coupon booklets, the Buckeyes probably would have noticed that Vanderbilt suddenly had another game scheduled on Aug. 31, 2013, against Ole Miss.

Ohio State needs a new nonconference game now. Maybe it can send a chain letter to a few teams to get the ball rolling.
