True freshman QB Shane Buechele shines in Texas' spring game

The race for the Texas starting quarterback job took an interesting turn during Saturday’s spring game when true freshman Shane Buechele made a strong case to be the Longhorns’ starter in the fall.

Buechele completed 22 of 41 passes for 299 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in the game while Tyrone Swoopes, who was considered the frontrunner for the starting role, completed just 4 of 16 passes for no touchdowns and two interceptions.

And this was just in one half of play after the game was called due to weather.

While neither Buechele or Swoopes was made available to the media after the game, Strong said without hesitation that Buechele could be the team’s starter for the season opener against Notre Dame.

Of course this is spring ball and not a lot of stock should be put into it, especially with fellow quarterback contender Jerrod Heard unable to compete because of injury. However, for Buechele to come in as an early enrollee and pick up on an offensive system that’s new to all the Longhorns so quickly speaks volumes about his acumen.

Strong told the media that he looks forward to the quarterback competition in the fall and that he hopes to have a starting quarterback named well before the season opener.
