The Sugar Bowl lands the ‘Champions Bowl’ between the SEC and Big 12

(US Presswire)

The Sugar Bowl will host the much-anticipated "Champions Bowl" between the SEC and Big 12 champions (or next best teams) starting in 2014 and will take the Sugar Bowl name.

"New Orleans and the Sugar Bowl are synonymous with postseason college football. For many years, fans have enjoyed the color and pageantry that New Orleans offers," SEC commissioner Mike Slive said. "The Mercedes-Benz Superdome has hosted many Super Bowls, Sugar Bowls and National Championship Games and having teams from the Big 12 and the SEC in a postseason college football game together only adds to this list."

The game between the SEC and Big 12 was announced in May as a way to combat the Rose Bowl ties with the Pac-12 and Big Ten. The inaugural game will be Jan. 1, 2015.

The champions of each conference will play in the game unless they are among the four teams in the new playoff format. In that case, each conference would provide its next best teams to the Sugar Bowl.

The Sugar Bowl beat out Dallas Cowboys Stadium and will host the game until the 2026 season.
