South Alabama launches exploration of on-campus stadium

South Alabama is investigating the possibilities of an on-campus stadium.

The school announced Monday it would begin the process to see if a stadium was feasible.

"Construction of a football stadium is an extremely complex undertaking that requires significant due diligence on the part of the University leadership, and we are at the very beginning of a process that will examine all the issues we must consider before a decision can be made," South Alabama president Tony Waldrop said in a statement.

The school said the process would be done by a "small group" of trustees, administrators and staff.

South Alabama's football program began in 2009 and the school joined the FBS division in 2012. The team currently plays its home games at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, the site of the Senior Bowl and the GoDaddy Bowl.

According to WKRG, the school's contract with the stadium runs through the 2016 season. If South Alabama decides a new stadium would be feasible, the contract would likely have to be extended for a short duration. A new stadium wouldn't be ready for 2017 if the preliminary process is now beginning.

The Jaguars finished the 2014 season 6-7 after losing to Bowling Green in the Camellia Bowl.
