Texas Tech's Nigel Bethel said Wednesday afternoon that he was transferring from the school.

Bethel had 12 passes broken up and an interception in nine games in 2015. The Miami native was considered one of Texas Tech's best defensive backs and would have been a junior in 2015. As a true freshman in 2014, he had 41 tackles and six passes broken up in nine games.

Texas Tech's defense was atrocious in 2015. The Red Raiders were 126th in the country (out of 127 teams and gave up 6.91 yards per play. Opponents averaged 7.89 yards a pass attempt and Tech was 112th in the country in passing defense. Losing Bethel hurts the team's chances to improve significantly in that category, though he hadn't particpated in the team's spring practices. According to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury said Bethel was concentrating on academics but he was still a member of the track team.

Bethel was a track star in high school and won the Florida state titles in the 100 and 200 meters and was part of his high school's 4x100 meter title-winning team. He was a four-star recruit in the class of 2014 according to Rivals.

He wasn't the only (ex) Red Raider making news on Wednesday either. Cal announced that quarterback Davis Webb had officially enrolled at the school.

LSU's Mike the Tiger was diagnosed with cancer earlier this week. He received flowers as a get well gift from Arkansas' mascot.

Ball State's new helmets for special games in 2016 are great.

Jon Kitna's son, a quarterback from Texas, is enrolling at an in-state school.

ESPN said it's reached an agreement with Conference USA to broadcast five games, including the league's title game.
