There was some bad news in the mascot world on Monday. LSU announced that Mike VI, its live tiger mascot, was diagnosed with an “extremely rare” form of cancer. Doctors said Mike VI’s “attitude and demeanor are unchanged” and could live for another 1-2 years with treatment.

In other mascot news, Texas announced that its next live longhorn mascot, Bevo XV, has been chosen and will be revealed to the public in the season opener against Notre Dame on Sept. 4. Bevo XV succeeds Bevo XIV, who died in October 2015.

Mississippi State landed a commitment from a wide receiver who is an early candidate for our 2017 signing day all-name team.

North Texas athletic director Rick Villarreal announced Monday that he will step down, effective June 20. Villarreal was hired as AD in April 2001.

James Pierre, a three-star defensive back from Deerfield Beach, Fla., was officially added as a member of Syracuse’s 2016 recruiting class. Pierre originally signed with North Carolina, but was denied admissions.

It was announced Monday that the Arkansas State vs. Utah State game originally scheduled for September 17 has been moved to Friday, September 16. The game will be nationally broadcast on CBS Sports Network.
