Skip Holtz fired at South Florida after three seasons with the Bulls

Watching Skip Holtz lose nine of his last 10 games this season was too much for South Florida to bear, and the school decided to fire Holtz, according to reports from ESPN.com and the Tampa Bay Times.

Holtz was a success at East Carolina, and a hot name when he was hired by South Florida, but Holtz's move to the Big East looks like a mistake now.

Holtz was never able to build the Bulls into a successful program. They went 1-6 in Big East play each of the last two years, as the excitement surrounding his hire quickly faded.

A 27-3 home loss to Pitt, which came into the game with a 5-6 record, was the last game for Holtz. After the game, he tried making a case for keeping his job.

"I'd certainly like to be [back]," Holtz said, according to the Tampa Bay Times. "There's been a lot of hard work that has gone into this, through players, coaches. There's a lot of underclassmen on that field ... a lot of young talent on the field. I understand the hardened position we've put a lot of people in, with the record that we have. ... I understand the nature of this business is to win games."
