Rutgers caps spring practice with special moment for two wheelchair-bound fans

Rutgers' ninth spring practice ended in the best possible fashion — with a heartwarming moment.

Matt DeRiggi and Danny Garofalo, two young fans in wheelchairs due to Duchenne muscular dystrophy, ran a reverse for a touchdown and then celebrated with the entire team around them.

“Those two guys are special guys in our program,” coach Kyle Flood said. “Two young men who have spent some time with us at practice over the last couple years. Danny lives in my town and he and my son share a birthday and are good friends. To have them both out here today, I thought we could try to create a good experience for them and a good experience for our players, too. It was fun to see them out there run the reverse.”

Moments like these are tailor-made for spring football and it’s great that Rutgers found a way to make DeRiggi and Garofalo feel special in front of the Rutgers crowd.
