Former Texas A&M OC Jake Spavital lands at Cal

Jake Spavital has found a home in the Pac-12.

More than a month after he and Texas A&M “mutually decided to part ways,” the former Aggies’ offensive coordinator has landed at Cal as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

“Jake is one of the brightest young coaches in college football and he is a tremendous addition to our coaching staff,” Cal head coach Sonny Dykes said. “We were looking for someone to join our coaching family that shares our vision and has a similar offensive philosophy to what we have used to produce some of the nation’s top offenses for nearly two decades. Jake has gained a tremendous amount of experience by working with some of the top coaches in the game, while he has tutored some of the best quarterbacks in college football history. Both will pay huge dividends for us.”

Spavital will replace Tony Franklin, who left Cal last month to take the OC job at Middle Tennessee. Franklin said he wanted to be closer to his family.

“It is a tremendous honor to join the Cal coaching staff as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach,” Spavital said. “The turnaround this program has enjoyed the past three seasons under the leadership of Sonny Dykes is phenomenal. I am excited to become a part of the staff and help take this program to new heights. I’m looking forward to building on the great foundation that has been established. I think this will be an excellent fit and I can’t wait to get started.”

Spavital spent the past three seasons at A&M. He first served as quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator before being promoted to offensive coordinator prior to the 2014 campaign.

Before his time at A&M, Spavital was a graduate assistant under A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin and Dana Holgorsen at Houston. When Holgorsen left Houston to become the offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State, Spavital joined OSU’s staff as a graduate assistant.

Holgorsen then accepted the head-coaching job at West Virginia and took Spavital with him as the Mountaineers’ quarterbacks coach. Spavital served in that capacity in 2011 and 2012 before joining A&M.

At Cal, Spavital inherits an offense that put up big numbers in 2015. However, record-setting quarterback Jared Goff declared for the NFL draft, so Spavital will be working with a new starting quarterback. The team also lost most of its top receivers to graduation or the NFL.

“We wanted to hire someone that has worked with the best coaches in the country, tutored the top quarterbacks and recruited the elite players, and Jake fit the bill perfectly,” Dykes said. “He also has a tremendous amount of knowledge of our offensive system, and we anticipate that he will take the basic concepts of what we’ve been doing for the past two decades and use his knowledge to incorporate new ideas that will make it even better.”

Cal went 8-5 in 2015 and won the Armed Forces Bowl.
