Reports: AAC and Sun Belt will play a new bowl game in Orlando beginning in 2015

To add to the never-ending slew of bowl games, the American Athletic Conference and the Sun Belt will reportedly announce a new bowl game in Orlando on Wednesday. This will increase the total number of bowl games to 40.

The Orlando Sentinel is reporting that the game will be held at the Citrus Bowl, will be managed by the Orlando Sports Foundation and “will be played before the Russell Athletic Bowl in December and would not conflict with any potential College Football Playoff or national championship games Orlando hopes to host in the future.”

According to ESPN’s Brett McMurphy, bowl organizers applied the game to be certified by the NCAA to play in 2014, but because a television network has not been found, the game’s start date has been pushed back to 2015.

Sun Belt commissioner Karl Benson confirmed to the Sentinel that the league sought out a spot in an additional bowl game.

“It hasn’t been a secret that the Sun Belt has indicated a desire to be involved with a fourth guaranteed game,” Benson said. “I don’t think it’s been a secret that there’s been an organization in Orlando that has attempted to launch a game.”

The Sentinel is also reporting that AAC commissioner Mike Aresco said on a conference call that “the league would announce a new bowl partnership Wednesday.”

With this new bowl, Orlando will host three bowls in 2015 in addition to the Russell Athletic Bowl and the Capital One Bowl.
