Pitt RB James Conner says he is cancer-free

James Conner says he is cancer-free.

More than six months after being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, the Pittsburgh running back announced the good news on Monday.

Conner, the 2014 ACC Player of the Year, completed his 12th and final chemotherapy treatment earlier this month. Throughout his treatment, Conner continued to train for the 2016 season and even participated in team practices when he could.

Conner detailed his quest to return to the field as a guest on the Ellen DeGeneres show in April. During his visit to “Ellen,” Conner met Kansas City Chiefs safety Eric Berry. Berry received the same diagnosis as Conner in December 2014 and was able to return to action for the Chiefs in 2015 and was a Pro Bowl selection.

Conner, a 6-foot-2, 240-pound redshirt junior, missed the 2015 season after injuring his knee in the Panthers’ season opener against Youngstown State. In 2014, Conner rushed for 1,765 yards and 26 touchdowns en route to All-American honors.

Now it looks like he could make his return to the field when Pitt opens its season at home against Villanova on Sept. 3.
