Philip Lutzenkirchen's high school to name field after him

Lassiter High School is planning to have Philip Lutzenkirchen Field.

The school is installing a new turf field and will name it after the former Auburn tight end who was killed in a car crash last summer. The plan was approved by the Cobb County School Board on Thursday.

From AL.com:

The project, at a cost of $332,421.68, will be fully funded by the Lutzie 43 Foundation and will be completed July 24. Money was raised by the foundation, which was named in honor of the former Auburn star.

Frank Filmann Stadium plays host to Lassiter High's football games. The new field will be named "Lutzie 43 Field."Lutzenkirchen's family memoralized Philip inside the high school stadium three days following his shocking death in a single-vehicle accident outside La Grange, Georgia on June 29, 2014.

Lutzenkirchen was one of four people in the car that crashed on June 29, 2014. According to toxicology reports, Lutzenkirchen, who was in the back seat, and Joseph Ian Davis, the driver of the car, were legally drunk. Davis had a blood-alcohol-content of 0.17 while Lutzenkirchen's was 0.377.

The car went off the road after not stopping at a stop sign, hit ditches and flipped over.

Lutzenkirchen's final season at Auburn was in 2012 and was cut short by a hip injury. He caught 14 touchdowns in his career. His father, Mike, gave a speech to Georgia last September about decision-making.
