Pennsylvania brewery to honor Joe Paterno with new beer
Jay Paterno is teaming up with a Pennsylvania brewery to create a new beer to honor his father, late Penn State football coach Joe Paterno.
According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, the beer – a premium American lager – will be produced at City Brewing Company in Latrobe, Pa. The town of Latrobe was chosen by Jay Paterno because it is the hometown of his mother, Sue, and where his parents were married in 1962.
The beer, known as the Paterno Legacy, will begin production in July and will be “available in mid-August,” according to the Associated Press. It will be available in 12-ounce cans and sold in 12-packs and cases.
A portion of the beer sales will go toward a charity of Sue Paterno’s choice.
Jay Paterno said his dad would have enjoyed the beer, except for one possible aspect of it.

Jay Paterno envisions “the kind of beer my dad would have had around the house,” he said. “I think he'd say it sounds like it could be some fun. Of course, if it had his picture on it, he'd probably say, ‘Get it out of the house.'"
Paterno was the head coach at Penn State from 1966-2011, but was fired in November 2011 in the midst of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.
Paterno died from lung cancer two months later.
The NCAA originally vacated 111 of Paterno’s wins as part of its sanctions for the scandal, but his win total was restored back to 409 in January, making him the winningest coach in college football history.
