OU teammate tweets suspended LB Frank Shannon is back with team

Linebacker Frank Shannon is apparently back with Oklahoma, according to a tweet by teammate Zack Sanchez.

Shannon had been suspended from the Sooner program since last summer for violating the school’s Title IX sexual misconduct policy.

A female student alleged Shannon assaulted her in an off-campus apartment in January 2014. The university conducted an independent investigation and decided to suspend Shannon for the school year.

Shannon was never prosecuted in a criminal court.

Shannon fought the suspension in court and was able to remain with the Sooners during that process. While he did practice, he never played in a game. In September, the Oklahoma State Supreme Court ruled Oklahoma could uphold the suspension and Shannon was removed from the university.

Oklahoma has not commented on Shannon’s status, but coach Bob Stoops has said multiple times that he expected Shannon to rejoin the team this summer when the suspension was over. Oklahoma began summer workouts Monday.

Sanchez has been one Shannon’s most outspoken supporters through the past year. He sent out a few tweets in support of Shannon last fall and also wore a headband supporting Shannon during the October game against Texas. ESPN cameras caught a shot of the headband, which ultimately drew a reprimand by Stoops.

Shannon led the Sooners in tackles in 2013 with 92. He also had two sacks and an interception.
