Oregon pays homage to state history with latest uniforms (Photos)

The Oregon football program is embracing its state’s history with its latest uniform.

The Ducks and Nike unveiled the new “Oregon Pioneers” combination that pays homage to the state’s heritage and Meriweather Lewis and William Clark, who reached the territory in 1805.

“We have many discussions with the Oregon athletes, equipment staff and coaches,” said Todd Van Horne, Creative Director for Nike Football. “For this inspiring new uniform, we want to celebrate the state and its great founders and innovators.”

The uniform features a bevy of references to Oregon, including a pattern of the Oregon Trail, a silhouette of Lewis and Clark on the helmet, and the 33-star United States flag from 1859 when Oregon officially became a state on the back of the helmet.

Other features include “the handshake found on the Thomas Jefferson Peace Medals that President Jefferson provided Lewis and Clark” on the front of the helmet with the lines on the helmet representing “the principal legs of the 2,200-mile-long Oregon Trail.” The words “Salute the State” are also on the neckline of the jersey.

The Ducks, now 3-2 after beating Colorado over the weekend, will debut the new look on Saturday against Washington State at Autzen Stadium.
