Oklahoma QB Trevor Knight out Saturday vs. Texas Tech

Oklahoma will be without starting quarterback Trevor Knight against Texas Tech on Saturday.

Sooners head coach Bob Stoops announced Thursday that Knight was not medically cleared to play after going down with a neck injury in last weekend’s loss to Baylor. Redshirt freshman Cody Thomas will make his first career start in Knight’s place.

Stoops said earlier in the week that Knight, a redshirt sophomore, did not have a concussion and that both an MRI and X-rays on Knight were negative. Still, Knight has not practiced throughout the week and after being reevaluated Thursday, the decision was made to hold him out of Saturday’s game against the Red Raiders in Lubbock.

Knight has started all nine games this season for the 6-3 Sooners, throwing for 2,197 yards, 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He also has 340 yards and five touchdowns on the ground.

In limited action this season, Thomas is 7-of-16 for 50 yards and one interception. He’s also run for 25 yards on four attempts. He has a favorable matchup against a Texas Tech (3-6, 1-5 Big 12) defense that allows 41.6 points per game.

Stoops said earlier in the week that Blake Bell, who converted to tight end in the offseason after playing quarterback in his first three seasons with the program, would serve as Thomas' primary backup Saturday instead of burning the redshirt of true freshman Justice Hansen.
