Ohio St. AD apologizes for comments that led to Harbaugh comeback

We've come full circle on this chapter in the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry. We think.

Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith tweeted an apology Wednesday morning for saying that Michigan was "jump starting" its program. Smith made the remarks when asked about Florida spring break practices.

Tuesday evening, Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh hit Smith with a comeback that referenced the tattoo scandal Ohio State dealt with in 2010 and 2011.

We don't need to emphasize, again, that these two schools are hated rivals. But even if they weren't, we aren't sure an apology was necessary in this case. Smith was right that Michigan has gotten a jump start with Harbaugh's tenure compared to where the program was under former coach Brady Hoke. Hell, even the people who were present for Smith's comments don't think the comments were all that incendiary.

And even if they were made as a poke towards Michigan, poking is good. This is a rivalry (sorry, we emphasized it again). And it's March. Some offseason trash talk isn't a bad thing, especially when it comes to sports.

Sports are fun. We need to remember that sometimes.
