Northwestern hopes to clinch bowl eligibility on Saturday against Illinois, but it will be forced to do it without starting quarterback Trevor Siemian.

Wildcats head coach Pat Fitzgerald announced Monday that Siemian, a fifth-year senior, suffered a torn ACL during the second quarter of the team’s win over Purdue over the weekend, prematurely ending his season. Junior Zack Oliver will make his first career start in Siemian’s absence, while redshirt freshman Matt Alviti will also receive playing time.

“My heart’s broken for Trevor,” Fitzgerald said. “He’s really disappointed. Trevor will be a great teammate throughout the week. He’ll be upbeat and positive and terrific for Zack and Matt.”

In relief of Siemian against the Boilermakers, Oliver completed 5-of-11 passes for 85 yards and also ran for a score. In three games this season, Oliver is 7-for-19 for 146 yards and one touchdown.

"He led us on three scoring drives and could've had some more," Fitzgerald said of Oliver.

Siemian ends his career with 5,931 passing yards, fourth all-time in Northwestern history, with 27 touchdowns, 24 interceptions and six rushing touchdowns.
