New Mexico RB Crusoe Gongbay suspended after kidnapping and sexual assault charges

Running back Crusoe Gongbay was suspended from the University of New Mexico on Monday after he was charged with two counts of second-degree sexual penetration and a count of kidnapping.

According to KOB-TV, a woman reported an incident to her dorm's community assistant on the morning of April 13. Gongbay, 20, turned himself in to UNM police Monday afternoon.

From KOB-TV:

According to investigators, during the early hours of Sunday April 13, a female student reported to a Community Assistant at her dorm that she was the victim of a criminal sexual penetration. UNM Police transported the student to the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Unit, where evidence was collected.

Investigators consulted the District Attorney's office Monday before requesting arrest warrants.

After rushing for 591 yards on 97 carries as a junior in 2013, he's expected to be a major contributor in New Mexico's backfield in 2014. New Mexico coach Bob Davie issued a statement about Gongbay's suspension Monday afternoon.

"We are aware of the allegations involving Crusoe Gongbay," Davie's statement said. "Due to the obvious serious nature of these charges, he has been suspended indefinitely from our football team. Once this process is complete and all the details have emerged, we will handle the outcome appropriately. As this is an ongoing situation, we will not be able to comment any further at this time."

Another man, Ryan Ruff, is also charged with two counts of second-degree sexual penetration and a count of kidnapping. Ruff is not a member of the football team. Police are also looking for a third man reportedly involved in the incident.
