Mullen wants to see police reports before making Simmons decision

Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen said Wednesday that he wants to see police reports before making a decision on the status of five-star signee Jeffery Simmons.

Simmons, a defensive lineman, was arrested for simple assault and disturbing the peace after he was accused of hitting a woman multiple times on a paved area near an apartment complex in Mason, Mississippi, on Thursday. The incident was captured on video and the Jackson Clarion-Ledger has identified Simmons in it.

"To me, like any situation you get into, you evaluate all the details and research every aspect of it," Mullen said to ESPN. "Our responsibility is to make sure we investigate every part of it.

"I want to see some of the police reports. There's so much more I want to evaluate within the situation before I make a decision about what's best for our program."

Mullen said he didn't think there was anything "appropriate" in the video, which surfaced over the weekend. Simmons posted an apology to the Taylor family via Facebook on Saturday. The alleged victim in the video is 30-year-old Sophia Taylor.

"The five seconds of video, I don't think there's anything appropriate in it," Mullen said. "That's what everyone is looking at right now, and I don't think Jeffery would say there's anything appropriate in that five seconds of video. I don't think I'd say there's anything appropriate in that five seconds of video you see. But looking at the bigger picture is where we're spending our time."

Mullen told ESPN that he'd talked to Simmons multiple times after the incident and there was no timeline for his decision regarding the highly-ranked recruit. The Macon police chief told the Jackson Clarion-Ledger that the incident was "ridiculous."

"It's ridiculous," police chief Lucious Mason said. "I'm at a loss for words. This isn't something that should have happened."

Simmons is the top-rated recruit in Mississippi State's 2016 recruiting class and is the only five-star member of the class. The Bulldogs' class is ranked No. 35 by Rivals.
