Michigan State lost another defensive starter to a serious injury.

Spartans head coach Mark Dantonio announced Sunday that safety RJ Williamson suffered a torn bicep in Saturday’s win over Purdue. According to the Detroit Free Press, the senior had surgery on Sunday and Dantonio said Williams could potentially return for the final game of the regular season.

Williamson, a fifth-year senior who has 24 tackles and two interceptions this season, made his 17th career start against the Boilermakers. When he left the game in the third quarter, Demetrious Cox moved from corner to safety alongside Montae Nicholson, who began the season as a starter, but came off the bench against Purdue.

Williamson is the third defensive starter to go down with a serious injury, joining fifth-year senior linebacker Ed Davis (knee) and redshirt freshman corner Vayante Copeland (neck), both of whom are out for the season.

The Spartans also lost left tackle Dennis Finley to a broken leg against Purdue. Finley, who was making his first career start in place of Jack Conklin (knee), is also done for the year. Conklin is expected to return at some point this season.

“We’ve had some injuries,” Dantonio said, per the Free Press. “We’ve got to adapt, we’ve got to reconstruct what we do and keep playing. We’ve got good players. We’ll maintain.”

The Spartans improved to 5-0 with Saturday’s 24-21 win, but dropped from No. 2 to No. 4 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll. Next on the schedule is a night game at Rutgers.
