A projected contributor on Michigan’s defensive line will likely miss the 2015 season due to injury.

Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed Thursday that defensive tackle Bryan Mone broke a bone in his leg during preseason camp. Harbaugh referred to the injury as “long-term” and said it occurred on blocked field goal return.

From The Detroit News:

"Freak play, never seen it before in practice or games," Harbaugh said. "We blocked a field goal attempt, the ball came onto the defensive side of the ball, which we shouldn't be returning that ball. Unfortunately that teaching moment came with one of our players picking it up, running around the edge, and Bryan was trying to lead block for him and they got their feet tangled up. When Bryan went down to the ground, his toe came down at an inopportune angle, and unfortunately a bone broke."

Mone, a 6-foot-4, 325-pound sophomore, was expected to be a major contributor for the Wolverines alongside junior Ryan Glasgow at nose tackle. He played in 12 games last season and registered nine tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a fumble recovery.

Additionally, Harbaugh told reporters he was unsure if running back Drake Johnson would play in the season opener at Utah on Sept. 3. Johnson tore an ACL against Ohio State in last season’s finale, but has been a full participant in practice.

"Drake is cleared practicing and I haven't decided whether he's going to play in this ball game or not, but he is ahead of schedule doing a fantastic job," Harbaugh said. "He's been getting bumped around, he's in practice. He's an explosive football player as you know, maybe better than I do, but I've been watching him lately, and I'm really excited about him."

Johnson rushed for 361 yards and four touchdowns in 2014.
