Miami projected starting quarterback Ryan Williams injures knee, will undergo surgery next week

Miami fifth-year senior Ryan Williams, the Hurricanes’ expected starter at quarterback in 2014, suffered a knee injury Friday and will undergo surgery early next week. The Miami Herald first reported Williams’ injury, and Miami assistant athletic director Chris Yandle later confirmed the news.

The Herald reported that “doctors believe” the injury could be a torn ACL. Yandle characterized the situation simply as an “ACL injury to his right knee” and confirmed that Williams will undergo surgery next week.

Citing a “person with knowledge of the situation,” the Herald reported that the 22-year-old signal caller injured the knee on a roll out during the team’s closed scrimmage Friday night and Williams’ status for the season is currently unknown.

The source told the Miami Herald that Williams was walking without crutches as of Saturday morning but was very stiff and getting the knee iced. It’s unknown whether Williams is out for the season. There is a possibility, depending on the results of his surgery and rehabilitation, that Williams could return to play, the source said.

Williams, who transferred to Miami from Memphis, completed 22-of-32 passes for 369 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in limited action behind Stephen Morris last season. Williams, who is from Pembroke Pines in the Miami area, started 10 games as a freshman at Memphis before his transfer.

With Williams now out for the foreseeable future, redshirt freshman Kevin Olsen and sophomore Gray Crow are expected to compete for reps with the first-string offense for UM’s final two practices leading up to the April 12 spring game. True freshmen quarterbacks Brad Kaaya and Malik Rosier will also arrive on campus this summer.
