Maryland suspends Levern Jacobs and A.J. Hendy for season

Maryland announced Friday that WR Levern Jacobs and S A.J. Hendy were suspended for the entire 2014 season because of a violation of the school's student code of conduct.

“I have spoken with Levern and A.J. and expressed my disappointment with their actions,” Maryland coach Randy Edsall said in a statement. “They showed poor judgment and failed to uphold the standards of a student-athlete at the University of Maryland. Both Levern and A.J. were regretful and apologetic about their role in this incident and understand that their actions will not allow them to participate in the upcoming football season.”

According to the Washington Post, Jacobs was charged with second-degree assault last week for an incident that happened on July 19. LB Alex Twine was also charged with second-degree assault in connection with the same incident as Jacobs, however, he's not mentioned in the release.

From the Post:

According to a Prince George’s Police Department spokeswoman, the incident occurred at 2:30 a. m. at the intersection of Knox Road and Route 1 in College Park. There were two victims allegedly assaulted, both of whom are University of Maryland students.

Jacobs and Twine were both identified as suspects following the alleged assaults, and both were charged Thursday. The summons for Jacobs means he doesn’t have to face a district court commissioner.

Twine was booked on August 21 and released a day later. Jacobs was summoned on August 21.

Hendy has not been charged with a crime.

Jacobs led Maryland in receiving last year. He had 47 catches for 640 yards and three touchdowns. Hendy, listed as a backup at safety, played in all 13 games in 2013 and had 32 tackles and an interception. Twine had 49 tackles in 2013 and is listed as the top backup at MLB.

Maryland plays James Madison on Saturday.
