Is Maryland football cursed? Terps’ leading tackler out for season, too

Maryland LB Demetrius Hartsfield (US Presswire)You'd think that losing four quarterbacks to season-ending injuries would be enough bad luck for one year, but that's not the case for Maryland.

Maryland lost linebacker Demetrius Hartsfield, its leading tackler, to a torn ACL. He is out for the season. Hartsfield suffered the injury in a 33-13 loss to Georgia Tech on Saturday.

"This is another tough loss for the program," Maryland coach Randy Edsall said, according to the Baltimore Sun. "Demetrius is a captain and has been a leader of this defense both on and off the field. I feel terrible for him because I know how much the game means to him. To have his senior year cut short is just disheartening. We will be here to support him through the rehab process and help him with his transition towards the next stage of his career."

Does Edsall have his team walk under ladders on the way to the practice field every day? Has the turtle mascot been replaced with a black cat? Whatever has caused this bad luck, Edsall's team is on an unfortunate run that is almost unprecedented.

Maryland had to use linebacker Shawn Petty at quarterback last week because the first four quarterbacks are out for the year. Now the Terps' best defensive player is out too.

Maryland is 4-5, so it could still become bowl eligible, but with Florida State and Clemson still on the schedule and an injury list that defies explanation, the Terps' season probably won't extend into the bowl season. At this point, the Maryland players should be happy to get out of this season without anything else catastrophic happening.
