Marshall gets custom championship belts as performance incentives

Marshall football has come up with a creative way to reward strong performances — championship wrestling belts.

A group of program supporters have worked behind the scenes during the past year to help create championship belts that resemble the same ones used in WWE. And what they came up with was four belts, each weighing eight pounds, which would be awarded to the best offensive, defensive, special teams and weight room performer.

Each belt is custom-made and nickel and gold plated. The four belts cost about $7,000.

“We thought it would be something that would be unique, that only Marshall has done, and that the kids would have fun with it,” said Geoff Perry, who spearheaded the idea.

Marshall hasn’t detailed what it plans to do with the belts, but more than likely they’ll be awarded weekly to the team’s best performers and be used as a recruiting tool during visits.

While Marshall isn’t the first team to award wrestling belts as incentive, it might have cornered the market on authenticity. The belts came from championship belt designer Rico Mann, who makes belts for the WWE, UFC and NFL teams such as the Bears, 49ers, Cardinals, Chargers and Titans.
