Luke Del Rio immediately eligible to play quarterback at Oregon State
QB Luke Del Rio won't have to sit out a year at Oregon State.
The transfer from Alabama and son of Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio was granted immediate eligibility by the NCAA on Friday.
“I knew it was going to be yes or no so I was kind of on pins and needles,” Del Rio said in a statement from Oregon State. “It’s more relief than anything. I’ve been waiting for two months. I’m really excited.”
Del Rio transferred from Alabama in March and redshirted last season as a walk-on. He chose to walk on with the Tide after having a scholarship offer from Oregon State and other teams. He'll have four years of eligibility remaining. That redshirt status likely impacted the NCAA's decision to grant him immediate eligibility.
A three-star recruit out of high school according to Rivals, Del Rio is vying, along with Brent VanderVeen and Kyle Kempt, to be the primary backup to QB Sean Mannion. In 2013, Mannion threw for 4,662 yards, 37 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. After Mannion's departure, the winner of the backup quarterback battle will likely have a head start on the starting job in 2015.
