New Florida head coach Jim McElwain still has not chosen a starter, so both Treon Harris and Will Grier will play in the Gators’ season opener against New Mexico State on Sept. 5.

Harris and Grier both arrived on campus last season, but Harris has the experience edge over Grier.

Harris started the final six games of the 2014 season whole Grier took a redshirt. Harris threw for 1,019 yards, nine touchdowns and four interceptions, but completed only 49.5 percent of his passes. He added 338 yards and three more scores on the ground.

Grier, who was rated slightly higher (No. 46 nationally) than Harris (No. 69) in the Rivals class of 2014 rankings, took a redshirt while nursing a back injury.

McElwain told reporters Thursday that he has no timetable for choosing a starter.

No matter who is under center, the Gators should be able to handle NMSU in McElwain’s debut. The Aggies lost their final 10 games in the 2014 season to finish with a 2-10 record.
