Jeff Gordon to drive Penn State car at Pocono race

A year after he drove a Texas A&M car at Texas Motor Speedway, Jeff Gordon is once again donning college colors for a Sprint Cup Series race.

Gordon is going to drive a Penn State car at the Cup race at Pocono Raceway on June 7.

The special paint scheme is through a partnership between the school and Axalta, a sponsor of Gordon's (Axalta bought longtime Gordon sponsor DuPont). The race at Pocono is also being sponsored by Axalta and if the A&M scheme has any bearing – it doesn't – Penn State should get a lot of visibility. Gordon finished second to Joey Logano in the Aggie car last April.

“The relationship between Penn State and Axalta offers our students the opportunity to learn about careers in business and engineering fields from the leaders of a global player based right here in Pennsylvania,”  Penn State President Eric J. Barron said in a statement announcing the partnership on March 31.  “Helping students toward career success is of critical importance to the Penn State experience, and partnerships such as this are another way of giving our students special, hands-on opportunities to learn about their fields of study and the job market.”

Gordon was on Penn State's campus Tuesday afternoon to unveil the car and drive it around campus. Unfortunately he did not go 200 MPH on Penn State streets.

The four-time Sprint Cup Series champion announced in January that 2015 would be his final full-time season at NASCAR's top level. He's being replaced in 2016 by Chase Elliott, the son of former Sprint Cup Series champion Bill Elliott.
