Idaho suspends WR Dezmon Epps after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend

Idaho star receiver Dezmon Epps has been suspended indefinitely, coach Paul Petrino announced Monday.

Epps is accused of allegedly assaulting his girlfriend Saturday night. According to Sports Illustrated, Epps’ girlfriend told police he struck her in the face. Epps denies the accusation. Epps has not been arrested or charged.

“I have zero tolerance for any inappropriate behavior toward women," Petrino said. "This is a serious allegation and I take it as such."

Petrino said the school was investigating the incident and that Epps could be reinstated if he committed no wrongdoing.

Epps’ career with the Vandals has been wrought with off-field issues. In June 2014, he pled guilty to a DUI and was removed from the team. A month later he was charged with theft.

However, Epps did enough to regain the confidence of Petrino and was reinstated this past spring. However, in June, he was charged with two driving-related misdemeanors. In August, Epps was one of two Vandals’ players caught on video stealing $285 of merchandise from the campus bookstore. He was suspended for the 59-9 loss to USC on Sept. 12.

Epps leads the team with 61 catches for 762 yards and two touchdowns this season. He’s also played defensive back in the Vandals nickel defense while the team works through injuries.

Idaho is 3-4 this season, the first time since 2010 the Vandals have won three games in a season. Idaho plays at winless New Mexico State on Saturday.
