Houston OC resigns after 30-13 loss to Texas State

With the exception of 2010's 5-7 result, Houston football has been on a major upswing since 2006 thanks to head coaches Art Briles and Kevin Sumlin, who have since moved on to other jobs.

New head coach Tony Levine, who was the receivers coach under Sumlin, was hoping to follow that tradition but started off with a season-opening, 30-13 upset loss to Texas State.

So how did Houston react to the embarrassment? Offensive coordinator Mike Nesbitt resigned.

Yep, after one game, Nesbitt "resigned," and assistant coach Travis Bush will take over play-calling duties.

Yikes!

I'm sure there are a lot of coaches that would like to part ways with their offensive coordinator after a bad game, but it never happens, at least not after the first game of the season. Still, the 13-point effort tied for the second lowest since 2007 and is unacceptable, especially with a quarterback that was recruited to put up gaudy numbers like his predecessor Case Keenum.

Quarterback David Piland redshirted last season, but as a freshman in 2010, after he was forced into action because of a season-ending knee injury to Keenum, he completed 58 percent of his passes for 2,641 yards and 24 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. Against Texas State on Saturday, Piland was 17 of 44 for 211 yards and a score.

Now, Houston has a week to get its offense together before a tough Louisiana Tech team rolls into town on Saturday.

Speaking of Louisiana Tech, the Bulldogs have now had to prepare for three different offensive coordinators in the past two weeks. First, they prepared for a Texas A&M game that was postponed until October and then they were preparing for Nesbitt this coming weekend. Now, the entire focus shifts to preparing for the play-calling of Bush, who was the OC at Texas-San Antonio last year.
