Georgia linebacker Reggie Carter is out for the season.

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Bulldogs head coach Mark Richt confirmed Sunday that Carter recently had surgery on his injured shoulder and won’t return to action this season.

Carter was expected to start at middle linebacker for the Bulldogs coming into the season, but injuries limited him to just one game. The junior logged two tackles in his only action of the season, UGA’s Week 2 win over Vanderbilt.

Carter is eligible for a medical redshirt.

The 6-foot-1, 228-pound Carter saw action in 20 games as a reserve in 2013 and 2014, totaling 36 tackles and three tackles for loss.

With Carter out, UAB transfer Jake Ganus has assumed the role of starting middle linebacker and is tied for second on the team with 29 tackles.

Georgia dropped from No. 8 to No. 19 in the AP Top 25 after losing to Alabama 38-10 at home. The 4-1 Bulldogs play Tennessee on the road on Saturday afternoon.
