Georgia and Notre Dame officially announce two-game series beginning in 2017
Notre Dame has found its SEC team.
The Fighting Irish and Georgia Bulldogs announced a two-game series on Wednesday that will begin in 2017. The first game will be in South Bend, Ind., on Sept. 9, 2017 and the second game will be in Athens, Ga., on Sept. 21, 2019.
"Playing Notre Dame will be an honor and a great challenge for us," Georgia coach Mark Richt said in a statement. "I have a lot of respect for the job Coach Kelly is doing there and I'm sure college football fans across the country will enjoy watching our two teams compete."
The two schools have met once before. Georgia beat Notre Dame 17-10 in the 1981 Sugar Bowl. It was the final game in an undefeated season for Georgia and the team's second (and last) national title.
Notre Dame had expressed desire to play an SEC opponent after its series with Texas concluded in 2016 and Georgia was an easy guess. Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly had mentioned that the school wanted to play in an area of the country it wasn't already playing in. The Irish have a five-game arrangement with the ACC starting in 2014 and play Florida State this season. Notre Dame is also playing in Texas twice in 2016, once against the Longhorns and once against Army in San Antonio.
Because of its annual rivalry with Georgia Tech, Georgia will not have to use Notre Dame as its fulfillment of the SEC's major conference opponent requirement beginning in 2016.
