Florida State’s student government passed a resolution banning all Native American headdresses from Florida State athletic events.

The resolution was passed on April 20.

Resolution 15 stated: "the wearing of any Native American headdresses shall no longer be permitted into athletic arenas at FSU," according to FSView, which obtained the document.

The resolution passed 27-4. Five members abstained.

“I believe the intentions are genuine, and in the best interest in the Seminole Tribe of Florida, I have a great concern for the fact that this could impede on student’s first amendment rights," an anonymous former SGA official, told FSView. "There’s nothing in national or state legislation that restricts an indivduals right to restrict clothing or material, and I believe there are certain consequences associated with the bill that could impede on student’s first amendment rights and could introduce trouble for the university itself.”

The Native American headdresses that are worn at Florida State sporting events have been a constant source of debate. Many contend they look more like the ones worn by Plains region tribes, such as the Sioux, rather than the Seminole Tribe.
