Fresno State is holding walk-on tryouts to find a kicker

Fresno State is looking for a backup kicker and you could be it.

The Bulldogs, who only have two kickers on their roster — freshman walk-on Kody Kroening and punter Garrett Swanson — are holding open tryouts for all fulltime students with kicking experience.

Yes, it’s come to this.

Earlier this month, starting kicker Colin McGuire left the program to deal with “personal issues with his family.”

“We really appreciate the contributions from Colin over the last year and a half — he helped us win a Mountain West Conference championship,” coach Tim DeRuyter told the Fresno Bee at the time. “We let him have a couple of weeks off during training camp this year to deal with some personal issues with his family. We thought we were over the hump, but clearly he has to spend some more time taking care of that and we wish him all the best as he deals with this difficult time in his life.”

McGuire did play in the season opener against USC and made one of his two extra point attempts. In his absence, Kroening has performed well. He’s made all five of his extra point attempts and one of his two field goals.

However, Fresno State is one of just three school this season that hasn’t recorded a touchback (Wisconsin and SMU are the others).

Can’t blame DeRuyter for wanting a little extra securing at such a pivotal position, especially as the Bulldogs attempt to defend their Mountain West title.
