Former Ohio State receiver Ray Small sentenced to four years in prison

Former Ohio State WR Ray Small was sentenced to four years in prison on felony drug charges Thursday in an Ohio county court.

Small, who played for Ohio State from 2006-2009, pled guilty in February to three felony counts of drug trafficking. He was arrested in July 2013.

It's his second sentence for drug charges. The first came from a May 2013 arrest and he was subsequently sentenced to three years in prison for those charges. The two sentences will be concurrent. He will have a chance for early release.

From the Cleveland Plain-Dealer:

He also will be eligible for judicial release, meaning that if he behaves in prison and takes part in programs aimed at rehabilitation, Small could apply for early release. His lawyer, Eric Brehm, told cleveland.com that Small would likely have to spend at least a year in prison before that could be considered. And he would have to be granted the early release by both the judge in Franklin County and Meigs County. But Judge Sheeran seemed open to the possibility.

The prosecutor even called the drug ring Small was involved in "amateurish" and said the gun found in Small's waistband at the time of his arrest was unloaded. In a court document, Small said he was trying to raise $10,000 to open a daycare.

Before being arrested in July, Small posted a video to YouTube in which he admitted he wasn't a good decision-maker.

Small was suspended for the 2010 Rose Bowl against Oregon, what would have been his final game in college. He was suspended for two games in 2008 by then-Ohio State coach Jim Tressel and Small's father claimed the suspension was unfair.
