Former Boise State QB Nick Patti granted immediate eligibility at Central Florida
Central Florida's immediate replacement from Blake Bortles could come from outside the program.
Nick Patti, who played at Boise State last year, has been granted immediate eligibility at Central Florida and will be able to play for the Knights in 2014.
Patti's father told the Orlando Sentinel that the decision by the NCAA for the waiver was given after "a request to waive the one-year residence rule based on personal reasons."
As a redshirt sophomore in 2013, Patti attempted just 11 passes. He was suspended by the team before the Hawaii Bowl along with fellow quarterback Joe Southwick. However, Patti was reinstated before the game and served as the backup quarterback. Southwick was sent home after allegedly urinating off a hotel balcony, an accusation he denied by taking a polygraph test.
Before the Hawaii Bowl, former Boise State coach Chris Petersen took the Washington job. Boise State hired Arkansas State's Bryan Harsin as his replacement.
When he officially joins the UCF team for summer practice, he'll be the second-most experienced quarterback on the roster too. Justin Holman threw 14 passes as a freshman last season, so he gets to claim the experience title. Patti and Holman will be battling with Pete DiNovo, a redshirt freshman, and Tyler Holmes, a true freshman to be UCF's starter in 2014.
Bortles, who helped lead Central Florida to a Fiesta Bowl win over Baylor and an America Athletic Conference title, is expected to be a first-round pick in the NFL draft.
