Did WKU know what play was coming on Vandy's 2-pt conversion attempt?

Western Kentucky helped seal its victory against Vanderbilt with a stop on a two-point conversion with just over 30 second remaining in the fourth quarter Thursday night.

The Commodores had just scored a touchdown to cut WKU's lead to 14-12. A two-point conversion would have likely sent the game into overtime. But Western Kentucky read the play beautifully and stuffed Vanderbilt at the one-yard-line. According to WKU linebacker Nick Holt, the team had an idea of what Vanderbilt was going to run to get the game tied.

The offensive coordinator Holt references is former Wisconsin assistant Andy Ludwig, who was hired as Vanderbilt's offensive coordinator in January. He was previously Wisconsin's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the past two seasons.

Here's what the final play looked like. Vanderbilt stacked three receivers to the near side of the formation. The receiver lined up off the line of scrimmage, Andy Marcus, ran to the flat while the two other receivers ran to the middle of the field, hoping to clear space for him. Marcus was stopped short of the goal line by cornerback Joe Brown, who started his career at running back.

“We sat right on it and Joe Brown made a heck of a play cutting down a big, strong receiver,” Holt said via the Bowling Green Daily News. “That was just a beautiful tackle.”

Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason called the loss a "minor hurdle." His team was an underdog entering the game.

“I thought all the way to the end that we were going to win this game,” Mason said via the Tennesseean. “I am confident of what this team can accomplish. This is a minor hurdle for us, so I just ask that the fan base stay around.”
