DeWayne Walker bolts New Mexico State for the NFL

DeWayne Walker has officially jumped off the sinking ship that is the New Mexico State football program.

"He is going to resign and accept a position in Jacksonville," NMSU Athletics Director McKinley Boston told the Las Cruces Sun-News. "It's official."

Walker will coach defensive backs with the Jaguars after four mediocre years with the Aggies. Walker was 10-40 overall and still had four years remaining on his contract.

New Mexico State football had taken a downturn a year ago after a mass exodus left the Western Athletic Conference with no choice but to suspend its football operations. Idaho and New Mexico State – the two holdovers – were forced to go independent for the 2013 season.

To date, New Mexico State only has nine games on its 2013 schedule with a possible date with Abilene Christian in the works. Not exactly the best situation for an aspiring coach.

Doug Marin, who just returned to the school as its offensive coordinator, will be the interim coach and New Mexico State is unsure whether he’ll be promoted to head coach or whether the school will seek a replacement through a national search.

Chances are that search will yield few results or else New Mexico State would have gotten rid of Walker, who had not won more than four games in any season and was coming off a 1-11 campaign, long ago.
