CSU coach Jim McElwain was not happy after Denver Mayor forgot his name

Following Colorado State's win over Colorado Friday night, the Rams and coach Jim McElwain were presented with the Centennial Cup by Denver Mayor Michael Hancock.

When giving the trophy to McElwain, Hancock forgot McElwain's name and stumbled for the right pronunciation. He was in the same zip code, but not on the same street.

The stumbling resulted in an awkward moment of McElwain taking the microphone from the emcee to say his name for Hancock.

During his Monday press conference, McElwain still wasn't over the slip. He wasn't even asked about it and brought it up himself. From The Denver Post:

"I will say one thing," he said. "I do understand where we are on the food chain from a relevance standpoint because the mayor doesn't even know my name.

"The guy needed help, man. Somebody pointed that out, that nobody thinks much of us, even though how many alums do we have in the Denver area? Like the most of any university there is? And yet the mayor doesn't even know the head ball coach's name.

"I guess that really shows where we are and where I am as a program. . . Boy, that makes a guy feel good. Guy giving you the trophy and can't spit your name out. Shows you how much they care about Colorado State, right?"

The disrespect card can be easy to play when you're a non-Power Five team in a rivalry game against a Power Five conference team, but after a two-touchdown win, it's this seems like the type of thing that can be a motivator for an entire season.

After Hancock learned that McElwain was still offended by his flub, he apologized on Twitter Monday evening.

McElwain chimed in a short time later.

We'll guess that Hancock will never forget McElwain's name ever again.
