It is unlikely that Clemson wide receiver Mike Williams will play again this season.

Williams, a junior, suffered a neck fracture when he collided with the goalpost on a touchdown catch in the Tigers’ season-opening win over Wofford on Sept. 5. Clemson offensive coordinator Jeff Scott said Monday that Williams is focused on his recovery.

“The most important thing is for him to heal up,” Scott said per The Post and Courier. “At the very least, to be able to come back next year and have a great year, that’s probably what he’s focused on right now.”

Williams was Clemson’s top returning receiver with 57 catches for 1,030 yards and six touchdowns in 2014. He was primed for another big season before his injury. He would certainly provide a boost for the Tigers’ offense moving forward, but the program is more concerned with him returning to full strength.

“I think the fortunate thing for Mike, and I’m definitely no medical scholar, but the fracture was not the spinal cord, it was just on the side,” Scott said. “Our mentality as an offense is we’re going to move on.”

A medical redshirt is likely with Williams returning in 2016 with two seasons of eligibility.

Meanwhile, his Clemson teammates are riding high after a big win over Notre Dame over the weekend. The 4-0 Tigers, now ranked No. 6, host Georgia Tech on Saturday.
