BYU signee Charles West was shot in the arm Sunday evening while playing pickup basketball at a middle school in Dallas.

West, a three-star running back out of Coppell, Texas, was playing basketball with several people when a man walked up to him and shot him in the upper left arm.

According to police, five or six shots were fired and West fled the scene. He got about a half mile before he knocked on a door and asked for help.

West was transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released.

Police said seven people witnessed the incident and a video also was circulating. Police were still trying to determine whether the video was authentic. Police have identified a person of interest, but have not yet released a name.

West, who signed with BYU in February, was arrested shortly after his signing after he was accused of raping a woman at knifepoint. On Jan. 28 a woman claimed West hired her as an escort for a "foot fetish service." She said he held a knife to her throat and sexually assaulted her in the garage. However, she refused a forensic examination, police said.

The case is still pending.
