D’haquille Williams has been dismissed from the Auburn football team, head coach Gus Malzahn announced Monday night.

Malzahn did not provide a reason for the dismissal, but AuburnSports.com is reporting that Williams was involved in an "off-the-field incident at a local nightclub during the weekend."

"When individuals fail to meet the expectations of our program, there has to be consequences," Malzahn said in a statement. "I gave D’haquille the chance to prove himself. I am disappointed that it did not work out."

Williams, a senior wide receiver, had 12 catches for 147 yards and a touchdown this season. Williams emerged as one of the Tigers’ top offensive threats in 2014 after transferring from the junior college level and finished the season 45 catches for 730 yards and five touchdowns.

Despite the on-field success, he had his share of disciplinary issues off the field.

Williams was suspended for last year’s Outback Bowl for breaking team rules. He was also suspended from the team for a week of preseason practice due to what Malzahn called a “discipline issue.” He was eventually reinstated to the team and has played in all five games for the Tigers this season.

Williams’ dismissal is the latest blow in what has been a disaster season thus far for Auburn. The Tigers were considered a legitimate College Football Playoff contender before the season began, but have trudged to a 3-2 start with losses to LSU and Mississippi. The team also narrowly avoided a massive Week 2 upset at the hands of FCS Jacksonville State, but pulled out a win in overtime.

The Tigers have a bye this weekend before returning to action at Kentucky on Oct. 15.
