Auburn, Rutgers lose defensive backs to transfer

Auburn and Rutgers both lost defensive backs to transfer on Tuesday.

At Auburn, Tim Irvin announced on Twitter that he will leave after one season with the Tigers. Irvin played in 10 games for the Tigers last fall and at times was the team’s top nickel cornerback. He finished the season with 18 tackles and two pass breakups.

A four-star recruit in the 2015 class, the 5-foot-9, 194-pound Irvin chose Auburn after initially committing to Texas.

Meanwhile at Rutgers, safety Davon Jacobs told the Asbury Park Press he will pursue a graduate transfer. The senior said he plans to graduate this summer. If he finishes his degree, Jacobs would be immediately eligible at another FBS school for the 2016 season.

Jacobs, a former starter, decided to transfer after falling down the depth chart of new Scarlet Knights head coach Chris Ash during spring practice.

“I just felt like that was the best option for me,” Jacobs told the APP of his decision to transfer. “it wasn’t the best fit for me. I talked to people who are close to me and we decided the best decision was to leave.”

Jacobs started in each of the four games he played in in 2015, totaling 16 tackles. He missed the majority of the season with various injuries, including a concussion.

In his career, Jacobs appeared in 29 games for Rutgers, registering 80 tackles, three sacks and one interception. He was a three-star recruit.

Another Rutgers transfer, offensive lineman Ryan Brodie, will reportedly finish his career at Monmouth. Brodie, a three-star recruit in the 2012 class, played in just five games during his Rutgers career – all as a backup.
