8-year-old with leukemia runs for 30-yard TD in Kansas State spring game (Video)
How many times has Kaiden Schroeder repeated his 30-yard touchdown run in his head?
The 8-year-old, who has acute lymphocytic leukemia, ran for a score during Saturday's Kansas State spring game.
You may want to have a tissue handy for the video below. It's the best touchdown run of any spring game this season. Just look at the cavalcade of blockers.
He didn't know "Kaiden's Play" was coming either. Kansas State quarterback Jake Waters did, of course, but Schroeder had no idea what he was in for when he was summoned by coach Bill Snyder to go into the game.
“That was the highlight of my day,” Waters said, via the Kansas City Star. “I was in the backfield with him and he was a little wide eyed and nervous. It was something special. I am just so happy Coach Snyder let us do that.”
Schroeder lined up to the left of Waters in the shotgun. When Waters took the snap, he handed the ball to Schroeder and escorted him through a hole off right tackle for the score. It was a play reminiscent of the touchdown run by then 7-year-old Jack Hoffman during Nebraska's spring game last year.
Schroeder donned No. 44 for Ryan Mueller, his favorite Kansas State player who had 11.5 sacks in 2013. The two became friends after the 2013 Fiesta Bowl. Acute lymphocytic leukemia is a cancer of the bone marrow and creates immature blood cells instead of mature ones.
“He has overcome battles,” Mueller said. “Who wants to spend their childhood doing that? I didn’t spend my eighth birthday party in a hospital. I can’t imagine going through that. We are all so glad we can help him out."
