2-year starting CB Josh Jenkins won't return to Army

Josh Jenkins is leaving the Army West Point football program.

Black Knights head coach Jeff Monken announced Thursday that the cornerback Jenkins is departing West Point because of an “academic situation.”

Earlier in the week, Jenkins tweeted out a link to a YouTube video with highlights from his two years (2013 and 2014) as a starter for the Army defense. The caption of the video says Jenkins is “looking to transfer from Army West Point” and has two years of eligibility remaining.

Jenkins missed the 2015 season after suffering a head injury in a fight with teammate Seth Combs, a linebacker who was dismissed after the incident. According to the Times Herald-Record, Jenkins returned to the team for spring practice, but was limited to non-contact drills.

Jenkins had a big season as a sophomore in 2014, finishing the year with 63 tackles, eight pass breakups and a team-leading four interceptions. Jenkins registered 34 tackles, six pass breakups and two interceptions in 11 starts in 2013 as a true freshman.

If Jenkins lands at another FBS institution, he would have to sit out the 2016 due to NCAA transfer requirements. If he drops down a level, he could compete immediately.

Monken also announced Thursday that fullback Drue Harris left West Point. He rushed for 179 yards and two scores as a freshman in 2015.
