Breakfast Buffet: The Pac-12′s first loss this year is not a good one

1. The Pac-12 was the lone remaining conference that collectively hadn't suffered a loss, but its first setback was not a good one. Guard Mike Black scored the go-ahead basket on a driving layup with 3.7 seconds left as Albany stunned Washington 63-62 in Seattle on Tuesday night. The Huskies lost sharpshooter Scott Suggs to a concussion in the opening minutes and failed to generate enough offense without him, enabling Albany to stay in the game and steal it at the end.

2. With former Iowa State and Southern Mississippi coach Larry Eustachy making his debut at Colorado State earlier this week, Benjamin Hochman of the Denver Post detailed his recovery from alcoholism and latest drinking problem: an addiction to Diet Coke. The Rams won their season opener on Monday night, earning a solid home victory over Big Sky favorite Montana.

3. It's too soon to tell whether Pittsburgh will contend in the Big East this winter after missing the NCAA tournament last season, but the Panthers putting away Lehigh early in the second half Tuesday night definitely qualifies as a good sign. They used a 21-5 burst just after halftime to break open a close game and roll to a 78-53 rout. Guard Tray Woodall had 23 points, Pittsburgh won the battle in the paint 36-12 and the Panthers held C.J. McCollum to a quiet 17 points.

4. Wichita State avenged its opening-round NCAA tournament loss to VCU from last March thanks to a guard who wasn't able to play in that game. Oregon transfer Malcolm Armstead buried a tie-breaking pull-up jumper over VCU defensive ace Briante Weber with 3.8 seconds left and Juvonte Reddic misfired from the foul line in the final second, enabling the Shockers to escape with a 53-51 win.

5. Anyone suggesting Delaware's 59-53 victory over Virginia in the NIT quarterfinals is an upset is going off of name recognition rather than talent. The Blue Hens, 12-6 in the CAA a year ago, returned all five starters including high-scoring guard Devon Saddler and athletic double-double threat Jamelle Hagins. Virginia, which has played mostly without point guard Jontel Evans so far, has now lost both to the Blue Hens and fellow upper-tier CAA squad George Mason.

What I glean from this all-access video from Michigan State's postgame locker room after Tuesday night's victory over Kansas is the Spartans really didn't want to fall to 0-2. Yes, they climbed out of a similar hole last year to win a share of the Big Ten and earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament, but the excitement and relief in Tom Izzo's hoarse voice is both genuine and noticeable as he addresses his team.
