Tottenham 1-0 Watford: Spurs up to second, title charge on

Tottenham Hotspur beat Watford 1-0 at White Hart Lane on Saturday as Kieran Trippier‘s second half tap-in was the difference.

Spurs dominated throughout but it took a moment of magic from substitute Dele Alli to unlock Watford’s stubborn defense and send Spurs into second place in the Premier League.

With the win Mauricio Pochettino‘s side have now won four on the spin in the PL and six in a row in all competitions, while the Hornets continue their slide with just one win in their last eight outings.

Spurs started well and their best chance of the opening stages came when Trippier’s right-wing cross was headed towards goal by Nacer Chadli but somehow Watford’s defense managed to scramble the ball clear.

From the resulting corner Mousa Dembele lashed an effort just wide as chances came at a premium at both ends. Ben Davies did have a shot which was blocked by Allan Nyom and Moments later Davies had a shot which Huerelho Gomes saved well and the Hornets somehow scrambled the ball clear with Kane lurking.

There was a moment of deja vu a few minutes later with Gomes again denying Davies from a similar situation, and in-between that Almen Abdi had lobbed a shot onto the roof of the net with Hugo Lloris off his line. Before half time Eric Dier clipped a great ball forward which found Kane but he was off target when he should’ve scored.

In the second half Spurs continued to push hard with Kane going down under a challenge from Gomes but penalty shouts were waved away and then his cross into the box was clawed out of Christian Eriksen‘s path by Gomes.

Finally Spurs’ pressure paid off as Dembele played in Alli and the substitute had an instant impact. The teenager raced into the box and picked out Trippier at the back post with a beautiful cross with the outside of his right foot and the right back couldn’t miss. 1-0 to Spurs as Trippier scored his first goal for the club.

Another sub, Heung-Min Son, forced Gomes into a smart save at the near post as Spurs pushed for a second but had to settle for a 1-0 win as Watford failed to truly test Hugo Lloris with Odion Ighalo‘s late effort as good as it got.
