Tim Krul‘s 89th-minute gaffe spoiled what could’ve been a nice point for the Magpies against visiting Manchester United on Wednesday.

The Magpies goalkeeper passed the ball directly to Ashley Young, who calmly converted to lift the Red Devils to a 1-0 away win.

Manchester United remains fourth, one point behind third-place Arsenal, while Newcastle is still comfortably in 11th place with 35 points.

Manchester United dodged a bullet early when Chris Smalling‘s takedown of Emmanuel Riviere in the box was ajudged to be part and parcel of his tackle.

Wayne Rooney and Young combined for a golden chance in the 27th minute, but Rooney uncharacteristically rushed his shot, flubbing it wide of Krul’s goal.

There was a mix-up between Johnny Evans and Papiss Cisse before halftime, with several onlookers claiming the two spat at each other. Of course, pundit Paul Scholes said it’s cool that Evans did it, but not Cisse.

“Jonny Evans is not that kind of guy,” says Paul Scholes on BT Sport. “What Papiss Cisse did afterwards is unforgivable.”

Riviere came close to giving Newcastle the lead just after halftime, flailing his right leg onto a free kick that David De Gea pushed wide for a corner.

Krul made a pivotal pair of saves in succession around the 53rd minute. Marouane Fellaini had the first shot, parried right, and Young’s high rip of the rebound was stopped by the Dutch keeper.

Red Devils’ Dutch goalkeeping legend Edwin van der Sar was conflicted:

Jonas Gutierrez subbed on to a standing ovation in making his first Premier League appearance for Newcastle United since revealing his battle with testicular cancer… and was booked with his first touch for taking down Adnan Januzaj.

But then Krul, apparently caught offguard on a non-foul call against Wayne Rooney, passed a low clearance to Young, who had no problem scoring into the goal.
